I advise and consult BiGmax scientists on the various flavors of artificial-intelligence and data-mining methods with regards to their specific research problems. I also coordinate, develop and advance the central artificial intelligence (AI) toolbox serving the various group.
If you are a BiGmax scientist, please do not hesitate to contact me to exchange ideas on how artificial intelligence can help to solve your specific use-case, or if you want to organize a tutorial/small workshop on a specific artificial-intelligence topic and/or use-case at your institute.

Examples of use cases:

  • Automatic classification of data (e.g. TEM images, crystal structures, experimental spectra)
  • Prediction of physical properties from structural data
  • Symmetry-aware representation of physical systems for artificial-intelligence methods
  • Discovery of interpretable descriptors (i.e. parameters capturing the underlying mechanisms of a material's property) from a limited number of data points
  • Visualization of complex, high-dimensional datasets in low dimension
  • Finding clusters and subgroups within a given dataset

Main expertise:

  • Neural networks and deep learning, neural network’s interpretation
  • Uncertainty estimation with Bayesian deep learning
  • Compressed sensing
  • Decision trees (random forest, gradient boosting machines)
  • Support vector machines
  • Kernel and Gaussian process regression methods
  • Clustering algorithms
  • Linear and non-linear dimensionality reduction techniques
  • Python programming
  • Automatic testing, code documentation, and continuous integration
  • Reproducible data science with Docker
